There are so many bills and issues to watch, it is dizzying. to keep up on all the latest, please follow OAGC on Twitter or Facebook (see directions below) or visit . Here is a quick list of issues:

HB512 is an explosive bill that take away most of the power of the State Board of Education  and merges three agencies, including ODE, into one. This new agency would be led by an appointed cabinet member reporting directly to the governor. This bill would eliminate the public's ability to impact education policy. OAGC strongly opposes this bill.

SB216, the education deregulation bill is scheduled to pass the Ohio Senate this week and will be debated in House Education sometime in April. While the most destructive language regarding gifted has been resolved in the bill, there continue to be issues including one that will impact gifted licensure.

Gifted Rule Changes

The State Board of Education is in the process of revising the gifted operating standards to allow the gifted professional development over four years (instead of two) and to decrease the PD hourly requirement to some qualified AP/IB teachers. The rule change will likely be in place for next school year.

Report Card Under Review

The State Board of Education is reviewing all the elements of the report card and is expected to release recommendations in May.
